Cairns are ancient, man made landmarks of (possible) Welsh/Gaelic origin. They are found throughout the world and most often date far back in antiquity. In Greek Legend they are associated with the god Hermes. Some Cairns are anthropomorphic and may represent people. They are also used as burial markers. Apparently, they aren't a human invention. Case in point, the Cairn of Mars.
